The current limiting reactor is connected in series with the power system to limit the short-circuit current when the power system fails. When the line is short-circuited, the current-limiting reactor uses its reactor characteristics to limit the short-circuit current of the line within a certain limit, so that the switchgear can remove the fault smoothly and effectively. Current-limiting reactors generally use air-core reactors with better linearity of reactance value.
The current-limiting reactor can operate safely and reliably under long-term rated current. In case of failure, its ampere-turns increase several times or dozens of times, but its resistance or ability to limit short-circuit current cannot be reduced. Therefore, the current limiting reactor should be made of hollow products instead of iron core products. The air-core reactor is an inductive high-voltage electrical appliance used in the power system to limit short-circuit current, reactive power compensation and equal shifting. The magnetic flux forms a loop through the air, so it is called an air-core reactor. If the rated voltage and supply voltage of squirrel-cage AC three-phase asynchronous motor are the same, an air-core reactor with the same number of turns as the motor can be connected in series between the motor and the incoming power supply to increase the inductance value and control the starting current not to be too high.
Hollow reactors are mainly divided into hollow series reactors, hollow filter reactors, hollow shunt reactors, hollow current limiting reactors, hollow split reactors, hollow starting reactors, etc., which are often used for reactive power compensation, harmonic filtering, current limiting and other occasions.
